Course Requirements

A total of 15 hours of core Physics courses are required of all Physics and Applied Physics students. The core courses should be completed within the first 2-3 semesters of graduate study. All of them are for three semester hours each. Currently, they are:

(a) Core Courses
PHY-521 Classical Mechanics
PHY-531 Advanced Electricity and Magnetism
PHY-532 Electrodynamics
PHY-541 Statistical Physics
plus either
PHY-571 Quantum Physics
or
PHY-576 Quantum Theory I and PHY-577 Quantum Theory II

Note: Additional courses are required for particular areas of emphasis, but the above core courses, except PHY-577, are examined in the Written Comprehensive Examination, and so should be taken early on.

(b) Waivers of Core Courses
The Ph.D. graduate core curriculum, as given in the Graduate Catalog, is an essential requirement of the Ph.D. program and may be deviated from only in exceptional circumstances. All waivers of these core course requirements must be approved by vote of the Graduate Program Committee. Petitions for such waivers must come from the student’s Supervisory Committee, with a recommendation for approval. The petition must provide evidence of equivalent work taken elsewhere, and must in addition show that the student performed satisfactorily in the subject area in question on the written comprehensive exams.
