Thank you for your interest in the Professional Science Master’s (PSM) in Nanoscience degree program at Arizona State University.

The PSM program consists of interdisciplinary courses that provide a knowledge base required for full appreciation of research and innovation in nanoscience and nanotechnology. Students choose courses in physics, chemistry and biochemistry, materials science, biotechnology, and intellectual property and innovation.

Commercial innovation is particularly emphasized throughout the program, including applications in optics, semiconductor electronics and optoelectronics, sensors, nanomedicine, and health care.

This program is specifically tailored for working professionals who wish to retrain in nanoscience and nanotechnology as well as for students with traditional BS and MS degrees. In both cases the PSM is a fast track program toward a career in nanoscience, nanotechnology and related areas. A two-page brochure is available for download. Since this program is unique, it is registered with the WRGP (Western Regional Graduate Program) that allows students from most western states to pay fees at in-state tuition rates.

Program Description

The program consists of 30 credit hours completed on either an accelerated 12-month track or a part-time 24-month track. This intensive learning experience does not require a traditional thesis and takes place in an immersive, professional atmosphere.

Core courses (15 credit hours), which include an applied project are designed to help PSM participants improve their background knowledge in a range of subjects. The remaining 15 credits are selected by the participant from a list of elective courses spanning multiple disciplines. (See Program of Study and Program Options).

Throughout the program, students engage with research faculty and peers in a variety of disciplines related to nanoscience. Visiting speakers and industry professionals interact with participants and enhance the program through their involvement in the Professional Seminar (NAN 591).

Admission Requirements

Applicants should meet the following admission criteria:

• A bachelor’s degree in physics, chemistry or a related field from a regionally-accredited institution.
• An official ASU online graduate application.
• Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate course work.
• A Statement of Purpose outlining your research interests and why you want to apply to the PSM program.
• Two letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with the applicant’s work and/or studies relevant to the PSM program.
• GRE scores are not required, but will be taken into consideration if submitted.
• TOEFL (or equivalent) score for non-native English speakers will be required.
• Students must meet all Graduate College admission criteria.
